Levantine Urban Music

Works on urban Levantine music are still largely devoted to the art repertoire, at the expense of "popular" or mixed repertoires.

In the same way, the study of purely musicological and aesthetic aspects is often favored over the analysis of the historical and social contexts which have allowed the intermingling and circulation of this music.

This research theme wishes to emphasize the neglected dimensions of urban Levantine music.

It deals in particular with the cross-cultural creativity long-overlooked by musicologists who tried to preserve the "purity" and "authenticity" of allegedly immutable musical traditions, or depreciated up to the point of being submitted to state censorship, as, for example, in Turkey and Greece (amanes and rebetiko) during the interwar period.
